This painting, entitled Breaking the Balustrade, is believed to be the work of a Sung Dynasty painter of the Imperial Academy. It illustrates a story concerning the Han Dynasty emperor Cheng-ti, his loyal minister Chu Yun, and the marquis Chang Yu. The marquis was found to be a traitor to the throne, and in his wrath Chu Yun asked permission to use the imperial sword to put him to death. This request enraged the emperor, who ordered Chu beheaded instead. In response, Chu clung to the balustrade and asked to be executed on the spot in the same way as another loyal minister had once been executed. The emperor was impressed with Chu's determination, and answering the pleadings of another minister, Hsin Cheng, relented. The emperor then ordered the balustrade, broken in the struggle, be left unrepaired.
