Ta Ba Mountain, a peak of northern Taiwan, is situated between Taoyan and Hsinchu counties. It towers steeply to an elevation of 3,505 meters (about 11,400 feet) and is one of the most popular goals of mountain climbers. The China Youth Corps holds many such activities as mountain climbing and camping in the Ta Ba area during the summer and winter vacations. The "Ninety-nine" hostel supplies visitors with food, water and mountaineering equipment. To reach Ta Ba Mountain, the visitor must go to Hsinchu city first, take a bus to Chutung, and then a lumber-carrying train to the entrance at Madalahsi. The rest of the way to the "Ninety-nine" hostel must be covered by walking. The visitors remain here for a night and supply themselves with things necessary. It takes only half a day to reach the mountaintop from the hostel by way of a suspension bridge (called Lovers' Bridge), bamboo groves and primeval forests. The landscapes are spectacular and beautiful.
The Central Motion Picture Corporation recently produced a film with Ta Ba Mountain as its background. It was organized by four young screenwriters, directed by Liao Hsiang-hsiung and starred Chang Lu, Yeh Ming-te, Chou Ya-fang, Ch'in Feng and T'ang Wen. Despite their suffering from many setbacks when working, they retained their enthusiasm and high-spirits. The story concerns a group of youths who want to go mountaineering. On their way, they enjoy the views of a beautiful landscape, and the change from routine city life. Unfortunately, the weather suddenly changes on their way back and they run into major troubles. Instead of seeking ways to solve their problems, they begin to complain against one another. They suffer from starvation and are facing death. Their parents know these boys and girls must be in serious trouble because they did not return as scheduled. A rescue group is organized and sent to save them. With the help of a helicopter, the rescue group finally locates the young mountain climbers and brings them back safely.
