Taiwan also enjoyed number-one standing in a variety of areas, including exports and shoe manufacturing, which prompted numerous multinationals to establish offices in Taiwan and so made Taiwan a leader in branch offices as well. For the 1987 article “Taiwan’s New ‘Number Ones,’” Sinorama spoke with the managers of the Taiwan offices of Philips, Hewlett-Packard, Ford Lio Ho Motor Company, and Hotel Royal Nikko Taipei about Taiwan’s recipe for success. While they disagreed on specifics, with some mentioning good fortune and others good management, all agreed that the high quality of Taiwanese professionals had played an important role.
The idea of succeeding through commitment and perseverance doesn’t only apply to individuals, but also to corporate development. Now a major player in the semiconductor industry, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) invested some NT$10 billion in what the world then thought of as a money-losing business. Sinorama reported on the company in 1987, the year it was founded.
We interviewed Morris Chang, then head of the Industrial Technology Research Institute. As sharp then as he is now, he spoke to us about the ties between industry, government, and academia, and their desire to build niches for themselves in the semiconductor production chain.
